New bill would require Trump’s White House to hire a psychiatrist

Democrats in Congress are concerned about Trump’s mental condition, and want him to get the best treatment possible from a licensed psychiatrist.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-California) is in the process of writing a bill to be introduced next week that would require the White House to keep a psychologist on staff to help the president cope with the mental rigors associated with having the highest office in the United States. Lieu told the Huffington Post that President Trump’s behavior both in public and on Twitter is cause for concern.

“His disconnection from the truth is incredibly disturbing,” he said. “When you add on top of that his stifling of dissent, his attacks on the free press and his attacks on the legitimacy of judiciary, that then takes us down the road toward authoritarianism. That’s why I’ve concluded he is a danger to the republic.”

Lieu’s assessment of Trump’s mental health isn’t wrong. In just the last 48 hours, President Trump insisted that all polls that reflected negatively on him were “fake news,” attacked clothing brand Nordstrom for dropping his daughter’s apparel brand, and veered into the realm of absurdity in a Wednesday afternoon tweet referring to the “Easy D” that would take place if his immigration order were reversed by the courts.

Rep.Lieu said Trump’s penchant for lying is alarming, along with his noticeable narcissism, and says his bill is aimed at making sure the nation’s chief executive gets appropriate mental healthcare when a nervous breakdown appears imminent.

“It is not normal for the president of the United States, within 24 hours, to write about death and destruction and fake news and evil,” Rep. Lieu said. “The most troubling aspect of this is it is very clear he has a disconnection from the truth. … The very first press conference he had in this administration, they could have talked about jobs or health care. They talked about crowd size. And then lied about it.”

“It’s one of the most bizarre events I’ve witnessed in politics,” Lieu added.
